Response to President Obama’s Message to Muslims
June 5, 2009
The first words that came out of former president George W. Bush, following 9/11 tragedy were his references to a crusade; which hit Muslims/Arabs like an earthquake. His subsequent actions and invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq have only consolidated his earlier statement. Also, the closure of many Muslim Charities and financial institutions has led to worsening of conditions for Palestinians and needy Muslims everywhere.
There is no doubt that the most central issue for Arabs and Muslims, and many more decent human beings worldwide is finding a just solution to the Palestinian tragedy. It has waited resolution for over 60 years; the two major obstacles were always: Israel and the United States.
President Obama's speech today was well received by Muslims/Arabs.They appreciated the conciliatory tone of the president, and are eager to reciprocate. However, they are eagerly awaiting practical steps toward implementation of his statement. The major obstacle in the way will remain to be Israel, and its misguided lobbies in the United States, such as AIPAC; who constantly fail to see that Israel's long-term interest and security is only served by a just solution to the Palestinian tragedy. The president needs to be firm and resolute in the face of the AIPAC storm, which will undoubtedly prove to be a storm in a tea cup.
